Modulation is what makes modular synthesis a compelling medium. Without control voltage, boredom ensues. But sometimes finding just the right amount of modulation is often tedious, if not difficult. Too much and chaos ensues. Too little and you might as well not use any at all. To help find that sweet spot, try fine tuning your modulation.
It’s simple: Use two VCAs in series. When you route a control signal to a VCA, you can attenuate it to help find the course range. But if you route the output of an attenuated VCA into a second VCA, you will now have a full knob’s worth of control on a smaller portion of the original signal, maximizing your resolution and more easily allowing you to find the perfect amount of modulation.
This technique works especially well when mixing with an offset voltage with the fine tuned CV because you can narrow your CV to a very specific range.
